Snoring is a loud breathing noise caused by disruption in the breathing rhythm during sleep. Usually, it happens due to obstruction in the airway while sleeping in certain positions.

When we are fast asleep, the muscles of our pharynx and nose are more relaxed and soft which makes them prone to any vibrations during breathing. And as there is an obstruction in the air passage between pharynx and nose, the palate, tonsils and uvula start flapping continuously making a loud noise.

If observed closely, snoring in adults can be found to be a result of several different reasons. But the good news is that almost all of the reasons of snoring can now be treated and this habit can be overcome. Some of these commonly known causes include:

Smoking - Constant smoking can lead to nasal congestion and irritation causing narrowing of the nasal passage. This stage is typically the main reason for snoring and disturbed sleep patterns. So, the more a person smokes, the higher are his/her chances of having snoring problems.

Consumption of Alcohol - Alcohol is known to slowdown our body reflexes immediately it gets absorbed. As much as it affects the other body parts, the throat muscles also get affected. Alcohol can ease the collapse of our throat flaps along with causing nasal irritation and congestion to some extent. The easiest way to avoid this situation is to consume alcohol at least 3-4 hours before taking a nap.

Overeating - Overeating or eating just before sleep can be a major reason for fat accumulation all over the body. The excess fat also gets stored around the neckline which can put pressure on the throat causing the narrowing of air passage. The first step to prevent snoring due to overeating is to have your main meals at least 3 hours before going to bed.

Sleeping Posture - One can experience the immediate difference in snoring while sleeping on the back and on the either sides. In the position of sleeping on your back, your jaw, tongue and soft palates tend to fall backwards due to gravity which can cause the obstruction in your breathing. This is the reason why doctors strictly advise the snoring patients to avoid sleeping on their back.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) - This is a sleeping disorder commonly found in obese people. The patients of OSA experience interrupted breathing which is caused by the narrowing of their air passage during sleep. They tend to wake up abruptly from sleep due to pauses in breathing. As a result the patients make gasping sounds called snoring while trying to sleep and also experience interrupted sleeping patterns.

Allergies - Nasal hypersensitivity can often result in respiratory allergies which my lead to inflammation inside the nose or throat. Such infections in the nasal cavity can prove worse during sleep time as it can interrupt breathing and therefore cause snoring.

From all the points discussed above, it can therefore be concluded that snoring is mainly caused by obstruction in nasal cavity or throat that restricts the volume of air passing through. Before taking any medication, it is very important to understand the exact reason for your snoring problem.
