Yoga and meditation are well known to help us sleep. These practices make our bodies habitual of proper breathing that strengthens our ability to sleep in a healthy way. These techniques are the natural way to help our bodies feel relaxed by creating a stage of half wakefulness and sleep. When watching a skilled yoga practitioner during meditation, it can sometimes be hard to tell whether he is awake or asleep.

The benefits of yoga and meditation are far greater than helping us sleep better. These can only be known after practicing these disciplines regularly and properly. But for our purpose of getting a nice and healthy night sleep we just need to dip our toe in. Here are some of the useful tips for beginners from yoga professionals about how to practice meditation to improve your sleep and try to knock out snoring for a long time.

Yoga helps in normalizing the sleep cycle

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice that helps in transforming our body and mind. Although its origin is a debated issue but some references show that it was practiced even 2500 years ago. Cave drawings discovered in the Indus Valley region have even indicated that meditation was practiced even 7000 years ago and no one knows how old it already was when those cave drawings were made. Having survived for such a long period of time proves it to be worthy of trying and implementing in our lives for some serious health benefits.

A famous global speaker and consultant Heidi Hanna, the CEO of Synergy, teaches different strategies to improve health through nutrition, exercise and positive psychology. She encourages practicing Yoga not only to reduce stress but also to enhance blood circulation, improve the strength of heart and lungs in order to support effective recovery during sleep. Hanna says there are many yoga poses that promote healthy sleep and also encourage us to pursue a full regimen of yoga techniques. As she explains, the deep breathing associated with yoga poses can also improve the capacity of lungs and help get rid of obstacles that can cause snoring. Practicing certain poses can increase blood circulation to those sections of brain which control sleep and help regularize our sleep cycle.

Another expert Eric Beard, who works with athletes of elite, junior and recreational level as 'massage therapist and specialist of corrective exercises' agrees fully with Hanna. For beginners, he suggests practicing more of the relaxing poses of yoga for best results. Strenuous or intense forms of yoga may not help beginners as much as relaxing techniques to enhance relaxation during sleep.

As per Kimberly Rex, 'a certified Master life coach and person centered expressive therapist' a snore free and healthy sleep may be just a few Oms away. By practicing meditation you can achieve a balance between both your mind and body. The breathing pattern during meditation helps in improving the quality of sleep as it decreases anxiety and allows you to relax.

Jennifer Reis the director of Kripalu Yoga 200-hour Teacher Trainings has been teaching yoga for over 17 years. Jennifer is a creator of Divine Sleep Yoga Nidra which relates to the yogi sleep 'a sleep like state that yogis experience during meditation'. She explains, if this Yoga Nidra technique works for yogis then it can definitely for everyone else.

Both the fields of yoga and meditation are wide as there is too much to know, but getting started can be as simple as buying a CD or MP3 and practicing the basic techniques comfortably at home.
